Before boarding, you must reach the airport, check in, drop bags, clear security and immigration, and walk to your gate. If you want to shop, include that time from the start.
Four stages from your hotel to the gate
The exact order can differ by airport. Follow signs and staff instructions on the day.

- STEP 04Duty free and the gateCollect pre-orders, shop, then reach the gate by the boarding time shown by your airline.
Work from deadlines, not a single universal time
Airport congestion, baggage, customs procedures and walking distance all affect the time you need.
A guideline is not a deadline
Narita recommends arriving at least two hours before an international departure, but airline check-in times differ. Your airline’s deadline takes priority.
Add shopping time separately
Pre-order pickup, walking to stores and queues are separate from check-in time. Keep a buffer for reaching the gate.
Check before bag drop and before security
Once a bag is checked, you cannot retrieve items easily. Separate documents, in-flight essentials, valuables and fragile goods first.
Passport, boarding pass and bags
Confirm your name, flight and destination. Keep the boarding pass and bag tag. For connections, confirm where you collect checked baggage.
Liquids, batteries and dangerous goods
International carry-on liquids have container and bag limits. Some items, including power banks, must not go in checked baggage.
In-town TAX FREE purchases
For purchases made on or after November 1, 2026, Japan’s tax-free system changes to a refund model after departure customs confirmation. Follow the store and customs instructions for your travel date.
Check your gate before you start shopping
Confirm the walking time and boarding time first. Open coupon and pre-order screens before reaching the till.

If the gate is far away, set an earlier time to finish shopping.
Collect pre-orders
Prepare the order number, passport, boarding pass and any other required items.
Show the offer before payment
At eligible Narita stores, show the offer screen before checkout and confirm exclusions.

How many hours before an international flight should I arrive?＋
It depends on the airline, airport and congestion. Narita gives two hours as a guideline, but follow your airline’s deadline and current airport information.
Is duty-free shopping before security?＋
Many airport DUTY FREE stores are in the restricted area after security and immigration. Store locations differ by airport and terminal, so check in advance.
What if I go to the wrong terminal?＋
Confirm the correct terminal on the airport and airline websites and ask airport staff. Transfers between terminals can take time, so check early.
